Ideas for supporting staff with behaviour management!

Support ALL staff with behaviour management!

Here are some of your wonderful ideas for reducing the stress of managing behaviour particularly those after the lunch break!

• Develop a Behaviour Reflection Zone – a playground area with supportive signage for both children and adults: Include school rules, playground / lunchtime rules etc. as well as a “Resolution Centre” sign for children to read through and think about
• Train ALL staff: When there is an incident, they take the child to the Behaviour Reflection Zone and ask them to read through the signs particularly the resolution sign. No “frog marching” but time to explain the supportive process of reflection!
• They explain they will be back shortly and will chat through the incident. This time gap allows the child to calm down as well as read some of the school rules or think about the emotions they are feeling etc.
• Return after 5+ minutes and talk with the child following the “Resolution Centre” conversation steps.
• The child agrees next steps to help the situation not happen again, any apologies that are due and why and what information should be recorded / shared with a teacher etc.

Why?

Talking through what happened after calming down and reflecting is the best opportunity to actually teach children and help them learn about acceptable behaviour. The Resolution Centre supports this conversation in a consistent and step-by-step way that ensures the child is listened to and all LTS are consistent in how behaviour is managed.

When a child’s behaviour is just like 2 + 2 = 5, teach them strategies to get it right next time!

PLUS give them the language to express their feelings too rather than lots of huffing and puffing!
