Ideas for getting reluctant young writers keen to write!
Description
Get reluctant young writers keen to write!
Mrs Church...You are a star! We love your ideas for growing confidence in young writers!
Here's what she recommends:
- Plan and teach a writing lesson as you normally would.
- Don’t mark it yet!
- When children are starting to say “finished”, take them outside with their writing.
- Let them read through the HFW chart to check spelling.
- Ask them to edit and improve their writing using the better word signs
- Final check for punctuation and read through.
- Now mark!
- Note significantly fewer spelling errors
- Note improved range of vocabulary that lifts the writing standard!
Why?
Mrs Church told us that writing is a difficult task and dreaded by many children. She had even found that If children knew when there was a big writing task, some were more likely to be “poorly” that day despite planning a multitude of ways to support and encourage them!
She also noted that spelling was often a barrier to attempting more inspiring vocabulary too. Going outside to edit has been continually viewed as a treat by children.
AND on the day before the big writing task, she always lets children know that when they have finished their first draft, time will be spent outside improving and editing! This extra incentive has made a difference for the most reluctant writers in her class!
