Ideas for making eco teaching REAL not just theoretical!

Description

Make eco teaching and learning REAL not just theoretical!

Not a day goes by without someone mentioning climate change and damage to the planet…but does this ever turn into positive action and change how we live?

This is clearly something schools are teaching and we love your ideas. See what you think of just some great ways of eco-teaching that schools have shared with us:

  • Provide some eco awareness statements for the whole school and parents as a constant guide and reminder.
  • Incorporate into DT and Science lessons: Reuse, recycle and most importantly repair and repurpose objects in order to demonstrate the real life application of eco-awareness
  • How can plastic bottles be used to irrigate an area of land growing crops?
  • How could you repair something torn or worn?
  • Can old cardboard be made into a pet maze that will fold flat when not used?
  • What can be done with clothes that no longer fit?

Why?

DT and Science lessons have greater learning purpose and real-life application!

Children learn that eco-awareness isn’t just a lesson – it has practical applications to how they live and use the planet’s resources. Many of you have told us how much children enjoy these lessons and begin to look at "rubbish" and the environmental issues highlighted on TV, differently!

Imagination and creativity are fostered and encouraged as the “throw away” culture is challenged.

With the amount of things thrown away or just put into recycling bins, the possibilities for repairing or repurposing are surely endless!
