Support less able children in writing

We love your ideas for supporting children with their writing!

"I use the Senses Word Wall. It's a great starting point for children to describe objects, characters and settings in a systematic way (a system that can be repeated until they adopt it independently)." Miss Hayley Thompson

"I start with a short activity using talk partners: I show children a simple picture and ask them to find a word on the Senses Word Wall that describes the picture then put it into a sentence for their talk partner. I extend this to writing the sentence then improving it!" Mrs J Pointer

"My 7 year olds were relentlessly writing lists when doing setting and character descriptions. Using the Senses Word Wall, they now structure their description writing with 3+ sentences in total looking at the top, middle and bottom of their object, character or setting. For extension, we use other literacy signs on the playground to improve vocabulary choices." Mr Edwards

Why?

Children often like structure and being faced with a writing task is no different. Providing children with a simple, visual writing structure for describing objects, characters and settings allows children to feel writing success! SEN children and those lower ability / reluctant writers love the simple but effective system for describing. It also moves away from writing that is more like a list!
