Description
Lift Geography out of the Atlases!
Try these ideas from schools where a map on the playground is the start of some wonderful geography teaching and learning!
With a number of different maps, children can be set challenges individually or in groups:
- Find key places, recording on clipboards where these places are in relation to their school – compass directions needed here!
- On a local map, travel from A to B: Name the roads you could use / draw the route on a given map
- On a UK map, travel from A to C: Name the places you might travel through
- Travel from A to D (abroad): Name the countries travelled through and the means of transport required
- Find key towns, cities, counties and regions of the UK
- Label a map with key towns, draw on rivers for a specific area etc.
- Identify where settlements have developed, industry, manmade geographical features such as reservoirs and dams as well as land free from dwellings – land with natural features – lakes, rivers, hills and mountains.
- True or false: X is in Asia? Y is North of the River Severn…
- Prepare then film weather forecast presentations in front of a map!
Why?
Should children only ever see a map when the atlases come out of the cupboard?
No!
For more informed learning that gives children a greater sense of geography and prompts more active discussion, enthusiasm and engagement, outdoor maps are perfect!
