Ideas for removing the monotony of x table chanting!
Description
Remove the monotony of x table chanting!
No matter how you teach them in class, some children just don’t learn the instant recall you want! Mr Cookson told us how his lessons outside have made a huge difference to X table knowledge!
- Take children outside with a pack of sticky notes or cards and blu tak type adhesive.
- Stand them in front of the x table signs and pick a table.
- Read out loud JUST the answers.
- Repeat lots of times!
- Now stick a sticky note or card over one or two answers.
- Read out loud the answers again but children must remember the ones covered up!
- Cover another answer.
- Read out loud the answers again.
- Now stop! What sum goes with the last answer given?
- Repeat again tomorrow but after an initial read through of answers, cover the same ones as today and another new one.
- EXTRA CHALLENGE: Say the answers backwards!
Why?
"Having all the answers visible initially and only requiring children to remember a few covered answers at a time, helps those who are unsure of their tables or are reluctant to engage! Other staff love this method when introducing a new x table.
Couple this with repetition and not having to relentlessly chant or sing 1x…is…2x…is… and you have an improved chance of children remembering AND USING the number sequences for times table answers!" Mr T Cookson
